This was painted in early 2023, during the time the enormous and fantastic Cezanne exhibition was on in Tate Modern here in London. I visited it a couple of times and was so impressed with his work ethic and how he seemed unbounded by what to paint and how to paint and instead got on with the work of showing up and painting whatever was in front of him. This still life set-up (and a few other paintings from this time) was loosely put together with him in mind.
